I always say I will share more beauty posts but often don’t feel comfortable doing so unless I’ve really tested the product. The past few months my skin became very reactive. I had to stop using a lot of my products and find the culprit. Turns out there was no culprit really, I added monthly facials to my routine. Most of all I find that double cleansing using my muslin cloth is what is keeping new breakouts at bay. I usually start with this oil cleanser, I’m on my 4th bottle. So I highly recommend it and for the second wash I use a glycolic cleanser that I got at my spa. I also started using vitamin C and retinol on a regular.
I’m starting to lean more toward products that are clean. Bad on Paper podcast did an episode with Indie Lee and she had some great tips for how to find cleaner products. Another great advice from her is not go and throw away your current products but reevaluate when you’re getting ready to repurchase. So let’s go over some of the products I’ve been using and loving lately.
Kora Organics Turmeric Mask: I’ve been using this about twice a weeks. My skin is oily and prone to breakouts, so on top of double cleansing, I do a few masks weekly to help with the sebum build up. This one has fine granules, I apply in it circular motions all over to exfoliate then let it sit for 15 minutes. I tend to do it before I shower, because of the turmeric you can easily stain your towels.
Tatcha Vitamin C Serum: I was using Drunk Elephant Vitamin C serum but after my bottle was over, I was open to try something new because I no longer liked the sticky formula of the serum. This one feels like water so it penetrates your skin and dries quickly.
Drunk Elephant Protini Cream: With my current routine, I do get dry patches if I don’t moisturize properly and this has been my go-to daytime moisturizer. It does the job without clogging my pores and doesn’t feel heavy. At night I use a heavier cream, Crème de la Mer is my go-to.
During the day, I love apply a layer of the Supergoop Suncreen, because with the Vitamin C and Retinol use, I have to use SPF without fail.
I was hesitant on retinol for the longest time, I got a really cheap one that didn’t do much for me. I wanted a stronger version without a prescription and I settled on the Peter Thomas Roth 3% Retinoid Plus. One thing I can say is regular use of Vitamin C during the day and Retinoid at night has made my skin so smooth and clear. My foundation powder just glides on and there’s close to no bumps on my skin.
I’m also dealing with some serious hyperpigmentation and for that I started using spot treatment peels. Know that for these old stubborn acne scars you may need professional help, be careful if you are a woman of color. A lot of popular treatments don’t work well on dark skin and can actually worsen your hyperpigmentation. So please do your research.
My last two are a shampoo and conditioner combo that really surprised me, I may be slow but I realized that a shampoo can make a huge difference just like the appropriate face cleanser for you. Unlike my skin, my scalp is really dry. I had this shampoo for a while, Moroccan Oil sent it to me but I wanted to finish what I was currently using before moving on to something new. I was my hair once a week, with a few co-wash in between and my scalp gets flaky. After two washes with this shampoo and the conditioner, my scalp is squeaky clean. I usually follow with deep conditioning treatment and the Moroccan Oil Treatment which I love, it doesn’t just sit on top of your strands.
I hope to make these posts monthly, to share the products I’m currently loving. Of course if I have nothing new to share, I will skip a post here and there. Have a great weekend and let me know if you have any more questions?
PS: On Sunday, my monthly newsletter is going live and I’m giving away over $100 worth of nice hair products for subscribers only. So make sure to join the list. I don’t spam and only send one newsletter monthly.
