What I Want, What I Really Really Want.

Hey guys! So today I wanted to do something a little different, instead of an outfit post I created a little guide for those who are or  just starting in the corporate world. Hope you find this helpful.

So you just landed your first corporate gig, but your wardrobe is made of jeans, t-shirt , club-wear and your favorite place to shop is Nasty Gal. If you are reading this you probably figured out that you cannot wear any of this stuff to the office. That was me a few years ago, I only owned 1 proper button down, 1 dress pants and 1 blazer and this is what I wore to my interview. For the second interview I went to the Limited and got a new pair of pants, thankfully I was hired then because I didn’t have a third outfit. Back then I was on the ultimate college student budget, I was not that girl that was carrying Louis Vuitton on campus. Once I knew I had a secured job with a better pay, I went to GAP and got a couple of pants and cardigans that I wore to death. Looking back I wish I could have given it more thought and shopped smarter. At the end of the post I will include all my favorite places to shop for work.

  • The blazer is a must! Everyone should own a great blazer, mine is the schoolboy blazer by J.Crew. See me wearing mine here and here.
  • A field jacket may not be necessary for everyone but I have this one in blue and olive and I cannot live without them. They are a bit more relaxed than the blazer which is great for my office.
  • During the Summer I mostly wear my cardigans because of the heat, I have them in all my favorite colors. Old Navy usually have them on major sale, but for a better quality and longevity I highly recommend this one from J.Crew factory, they are currently on sale for $22.50
  • Sleeveless blouses are great specially if you have other plans after work, I never go to work in sleeveless clothing (that’s just my personal choice) but they are great to pair with cardigans, blazers and jacket. I have this one in many colors from Express.
  • A great button down, blouse and sweater are all staples in my work wardrobe. I love Gap’s button downs they fit so well and the portofino from Express is another favorite of mine. I get my blouses from everywhere, specially LOFT and Express. I love the merino tippi sweater and the Equipment Asher sweater is an amazing one as well, but they are a bit pricey :/ I usually hunt them down at Saks or Off5th end of season sales.

  • I used to be a pants girl but I slowly became a skirts girl but that’s mostly because I live in South Florida and skirts are just more practical. A nice pair of trousers will last you forever and are easy to find. Express always have them in many cuts and colors, as well as Banana Republic. I am dying to go try this Express pair.
  • For pencil skirts I am partial to the J.Crew No 2 pencil skirt ( as you can see here, here and here), I get my A-Line skirts many places.
  • I don’t have a lot of work dresses, my go-to cuts are a fit&flare like this one I am wearing here and here. Or a shift dress like this one. I’m getting so much use out of these 2 dresses.

  • These are my preferred shoe style for work, I prefer to look polish so I usually save the sandals for casual Friday. If you’ve been following this blog for a while you know that I love Cole Haan. This new style comes in so many colors, I really want the leopard pair. Nine West is another great brand that I love and that is more affordable. This pump is sexy and very work appropriate. Honestly almost all my work shoes are from Cole Haan, I live in their flats. I have been wearing some of them for over 5 years.

  • For work reach for classy jewelry, you can do a statement necklace but preferably with a simpler outfit. Some offices are more strict than others but some things you just cannot wear to the office.
