French Wardrobe Challenge

Hi guys! I mentioned last week in this post that I was doing the French Wardrobe Challenge. If you’ve been following for a while you know that for Lent I gave up shopping. I wanted to try this challenge because while on the shopping ban of course I was really tempted to cheat (hey I’m only human). I was only able to resist by analysing why I didn’t need this or that item. I am an impulse buyer, so I had to talk myself into why I didn’t need to make this purchase right here right now. I want to get better at curating my purchases, and by doing so I think I will buy less, save more and be able to spend a bit more on my basics and stand-out pieces.

SO WHAT IS THE FRENCH WARDROBE CHALLENGE?

Basically, you start with a solid foundation of basic clothing and purchase five stand-out items each season (Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer) to update your wardrobe. Accessories do not count, which is good otherwise I would have already failed at this.

THE RULES

  1. Quality over quantity.
  2. Basics don’t count.
  3. Accessories don’t count, unless you’re spending a lot more than usual.
  4. Socks and underwear don’t count.
  5. Shoes do count. (I decided to not count shoes but I have made an effort in the last few months to not buy as many shoes as I used to)

THE BASICS

  • T-shirts in black, grey and white (Like Jessica I decide to add stripes as well)
  • Tank tops in black, grey and white (I’m not really big on tank tops, so I will switch this with button downs)
  • Blouse in white or cream.
  • Black dress
  • Black blazer
  • Black cardigan or sweater
  • Black pants
  • Jeans (adding denim shorts)
  • Black skirt
  • Leather jacket (I don’t need another leather jacket, I have one and I do not plan on purchasing another)
  • Trench coat (not sure about that one, I don’t really need a trench here in South Florida)
  • Winter coat (I decided to switch this with Bathing Suits, I live in South Florida after-all)
  • Black suit (I personally do not need a suit)
  • Black pumps
  • Ankle boots
  • Ballet flats
  • Sneakers
  • Watch in gold or silver
  • Black leather bag (I’m also adding any classic black or brown bag)

Note: For everything that says ‘black’ only, I would say any solid colors because I am not big on black.

TIMEFRAME

Spring / Summer: March 20th to September 21th

Fall / winter: September 22th to March 19th

THE WISHLIST

floral track pants || gray split tee || palm print dress || pink skater skirt || black crossbody || black skirt || blue one piece || brown sandals || pink top and bottom

MY PROGRESS

Well I decided to give this a try while on a shopping ban, basically my ban will be lifted on April 20th so I don’t have much to add here. Above are a few items I have my eyes on. To see more items I am watching, check out my Pinterest board Lust List.

Part of my Five:

  • For now I’m not sure what I want my five stand out items to be, whenever I see something I cannot decide if it is worth a spot in my top 5.

Basics:

  • As soon as my ban is lifted I am getting this scoopback bathing suit and this neon pink top and bathing bottom, both are by J.Crew. I started hitting the beach and I want my bathing suit game to be on point.

Bags:

  • n/a

Accessories:

  • n/a

Shoes:

  • n/a

Ordered and Returned:

  • n/a

I will be doing a recap every month, hopefully the next one will be more interesting. Jessica from Bedknobs and Baubles is also doing this challenge, she links up to other bloggers doing this. If you plan on giving this a try, let me know and I will link to you as well.

Haha I kind of do this naturally, I didn’t realize it had a name! For me it started because of my love of travel.. I needed to minimalize stuff so I could be on the move, and so I needed everything to match and work together to maximize outfit potential with few things! I never put myself on an actual shopping ban like you, but I aim never to buy things that I don’t think I’ll want to keep long-term, that aren’t classic enough that I’ll still be able to wear them in a few seasons, and and that don’t match the rest of my small wardrobe. At a certain point the temptation to buy things goes away!

Hi Isa, I hope I eventually get to be more like you. You traveling pics are amazing by the way. Thanks again for stopping by.

I’m so excited you’re doing this! It also gives me more motivation to stay on track. :-) That black crossbody is absolutely worth the splurge. I love mine and I can’t believe I went this long without it!

Yes it’s good to have someone to relate to while doing this. I have a beige crossbody that I use so often, I feel like I would get a lot of use out of the black one. I’m excited to do this.

I love the idea of this challenge. I really need to do it since I feel like all i buy are shoes!!!

This seems like a great way to limit shopping in a reasonable way. I can’t wait to see your progress next month!

This is such a great idea, I’m just not sure I’d be able to commit to it! Good luck!!

Wow, I love the idea of this! I might need to try it as well because I really really need to do a better job of getting all the basics before I buy unique or trendy pieces. It makes it SO much easier to get ready in the morning when I have my go-to basics!

I need to go out shopping soon… so when your ban is lifted let me know girl date to the mall! :)

I’ve heard of this challenge! I need to get better at remixing the pieces I have in my closet! I definitely need to do a shopping ban!

  • Kacie’s Kloset

It can be so difficult not to overspend or not to buy super cute clothes that you don’t really need. This sounds like a great challenge. I need to add some quality basics to my wardrobe. I’ve been making a list of items I really want and looking at that when I shop so I don’t buy something just because.

Yay! I’m so down for that I decided to continue the ban until the end of April, so in May we should totally do that. And I need to finish cleaning my closet before I add anything new to it.

    They are very rewarding.

I applaud you for taking on such a tough challenge, but I think it will be so rewarding! My shopping budget will be next to nothing in the next year to accommodate a home purchase and renovations, so I’m inspired by your curating each item you purchase!

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of this, especially those skirts!

I find more and more that the less I buy, the less I want to… it’s like an addiction I never knew I had :P keep us updated on your journey!
